Fern-lined creek walking below Mount Lofty
Threading through the heart of Cleland Conservation Park, the Cleland Gully Trail follows a creek line up the eastern face of Mount Lofty. It's a cooler, greener counterpoint to the open summit, with tree ferns, stringybarks and mossy boulders crowding the path.
Koalas are regularly spotted dozing in the canopy, and the understorey is alive with superb fairy-wrens and eastern spinebills. The grade is moderate, with some steady climbing, and it links into the wider network of Cleland and Waterfall Gully trails.
Go early or after rain, when the gully is at its most atmospheric and the birdlife most active.
