Artwine

True to its name, Artwine runs on two passions. The first is wine made from grapes most Australian cellar doors have never heard of - the estate has planted an unusually broad sweep of emerging varieties, and a seated tasting here is a tour of wines you simply won't find at the next cellar door along. The second is art: the walls of the architecturally designed tasting room carry large works by South Australian artists, so the eyes get as much to do as the palate.

The building itself, fully accessible and walled in glass, looks across rolling estate vines to the green ridges beyond Woodside - one of the better views on the Bird in Hand Road wine strip. Tastings come with Hills cheese, lavosh and house-roasted almonds, or you can simply treat the place as a wine bar: a glass, a local platter, a couch, no hurry. Sociable dogs are welcome on the outside lawns, where water and treats await.

It is open daily from 11am to 5pm, with weekend bookings recommended. The location makes it an easy pairing with neighbouring Bird in Hand, or a civilised finish to a morning ride on the Amy Gillett Bikeway through the valley below.
