History and gardens
Aldgate takes its name from a district in London, and its story begins with the Aldgate Pump - a roadside water pump and inn opened in 1864 by publican Richard Hawkins to refresh the horse and bullock teams passing through. The railway reached the village in 1883, and the settlement grew from there. Today one of its quiet treasures is Stangate House and Garden, a National Trust property developed in the 1940s whose grounds rank among Australia's finest camellia gardens, recognised by the International Camellia Society.
Bushwalking and wildlife
Beyond the village, the Aldgate Valley Nature Walk - nicknamed the Valley of the Bandicoots - links restored patches of native bushland and connects through to nearby Mylor Conservation Park, making Aldgate a favourite with bushwalkers, koala spotters and anyone hoping to glimpse the shy southern brown bandicoot at dusk.
