Romantic glasshouse ruins from a pioneering nursery

On the lower north-western slopes of the Hills near Tea Tree Gully stand the evocative ruins of Newman's Nursery, one of colonial South Australia's most ambitious horticultural enterprises. Established in the 1850s, it once supplied plants, seeds and trees across the young colony.

What survives today are the atmospheric stone walls and arches of the great glasshouse and propagating houses, draped in ivy and framed by old exotic trees. It's a favourite with photographers and history buffs, and a quietly beautiful reminder of the Hills' long gardening heritage.

The site is on private land adjoining a reserve, so check current access arrangements before visiting.
