Nepenthe Wines
One of the Hills' founding cool-climate names, with a relaxed cellar door among the vines at Balhannah.
Nepenthe helped put the Adelaide Hills on the wine map in the 1990s, championing cool-climate styles when the district was still better known for apples. The cellar door at Balhannah keeps that pioneering spirit, pouring the crisp whites and elegant reds the region is now famous for.
The tasting room is unfussy and welcoming, with vineyard views and a friendly bench. Sauvignon blanc, pinot gris and chardonnay are the staples, alongside cooler-climate shiraz and pinot noir.
It's an easy, central stop on any Hills wine route, and a good place to understand how the region's reputation was built.
