A fifth-generation family estate near Oakbank making precise chardonnay, syrah and a cult "Artisan" range, poured in a relaxed cellar door among the gums.
Murdoch Hill has farmed the same Oakbank land for five generations, and the family planted vines here in the 1990s as the Hills found its feet as a cool-climate region. The estate vineyards climb between 400 and 500 metres, and the fruit shows it — taut chardonnay, peppery syrah and a savoury, almost Burgundian pinot noir.
The cellar door is unfussy and friendly, the kind of place where you can take your time over the flagship wines and the more experimental Artisan small-batch range. It's an easy first or last stop on any central-Hills loop, with the Oakbank racecourse and village just down the road.
