The southern Hills village loop

1 day History, country pubs and quiet back roads 5 stops

Most visitors never make it south of Hahndorf, which is exactly why this loop is so rewarding. The high southern plateau of the Adelaide Hills is a landscape of dairy paddocks, gold-rush history and unhurried country towns.

The plan

Begin in the gold-mining village of Echunga, then strike south across the plateau through Meadows' dairy country. Climb to the hilltop hamlet of Prospect Hill for its history museum and long coastal views, then loop back through the rolling vineyards around Macclesfield. Pack a picnic or rely on the country pubs and bakeries along the way.
