A tiny historic village on the Onkaparinga
Just down the hill from Hahndorf, Verdun is one of the Adelaide Hills' smallest and least-changed villages. Settled by German Lutheran families in the 1840s, it was originally called Grunthal before being renamed during the First World War.
Today it's a cluster of stone cottages, a country hotel and a handful of food producers strung along the Onkaparinga River flats. There's little to "do" in the formal sense, which is precisely the appeal: it's a quiet, photogenic detour from the busier tourist trail.
Most visitors pass through on the way between Hahndorf and Bridgewater, but it rewards a slow loop on foot.
