Heritage & History

German settlement and colonial villages

The best heritage & history in Oakbank

Trace the story of Australia's oldest surviving German settlement and the timber, mining and orchard towns that grew up across the ranges.

The Adelaide Hills wears its history openly, from German Lutheran settler villages to bluestone coaching inns built for travellers heading up from the plains. Hahndorf, founded in 1839, is Australia's oldest surviving German settlement, and its Fachwerk buildings, bakeries and beer halls still tell that story along the plane-tree-lined main street.

The region's heritage spreads well beyond Hahndorf. Old mill towns like Lobethal and Birdwood grew up around flour and wool, and the landmark 1860s Bridgewater Mill still turns its enormous waterwheel. At Birdwood, the National Motor Museum fills an 1852 flour mill with the story of Australian motoring, while volunteer-run steam trains and heritage main streets keep the past close.

Many of the region's pubs, churches and cottages date to the 1840s and 50s, and a slow drive between the villages is the best way to read the layers of settlement, farming and industry written across the ranges.
