Most visitors to the Adelaide Hills never make it past the busy western villages, which is exactly why the Torrens Valley in the north-east is such a pleasure. Here the River Torrens winds through green farmland and old stone towns at a pace that feels a generation removed from the rest of the region.
Gumeracha and the big rocking horse
The valley's western gateway is Gumeracha, home to the Big Rocking Horse - a genuinely enormous, climbable landmark with a small animal park at its base. It's the kind of cheerfully oversized attraction that has delighted carloads of kids for decades.
Birdwood and its motor museum
Further along, Birdwood centres on the National Motor Museum, Australia's largest collection of historic vehicles, housed in a grand old flour mill. The village's stone main street, country bakery and pub reward a wander, and nearby Melba's Chocolate Factory lets you watch chocolate made the old-fashioned way.
The pleasure of the back roads
The real joy of the Torrens Valley, though, is the driving - quiet roads through orchards and rolling farmland, with the river never far away. It's proof that there's far more to the Adelaide Hills than its famous cellar doors, if you're willing to head a little further east.
